Donna Duncan, Certified Lymphedema Specialist

Lymphedema is the swelling of a body part, most often found in the extremities, although it can appear in a persons face, neck, abdomen and even genitals. Lymphedema is the result of the abnormal accumulation of protein rich edema fluid in the affected area due to a breakdown of the lymphatic system.

Children, men and women can all be afflicted with degrees of this uncomfortable, disfiguring and sometimes even dangerous condition and many situations can be the trigger for lymphedema.

In the United States it is seen in one out of four patients who have undergone some kind of surgery or radiation treatment that has dissected or compromised their lymph nodes. These procedures are most frequently done when cancer is involved or suspected to be, in that region of the body.

The type of cancer could be malignant melanoma, lymphoma, prostate, uterine or bladder but the most prevalent cases of lymphedema show up in the arms and hands of women who have had their axillary lymph nodes altered due to breast cancer treatment.

If addressed during the early stages of onset, lymphedema can be avoided. Once taken hold however, the condition becomes chronic and must then be managed for life. Fortunately education and treatment are available from practitioners who have been specifically certified as lymphedema specialists. This is far different from the lymph work done by mainstream massage therapist on individuals with intact lymphatic systems. It is essential to look for valid credentials from top schools that specifically list Decompression Therapy as a component. Don't risk your health with substitutes if lymphedema is a concern in your life. Donna Duncan has trained with the Klose School of Manual Lymph Drainage and Complete Decongestive Therapy, as well as the Austrian based Vodder School of lymphedema management. She is available for your questions and eager to help you in managing your care. For more information about lymphedema and its treatment, please click here.
